TALLAHASSEE - Secretary of State Kurt Browning said Wednesday that he has ordered county election officials to submit signature validations for citizen initiatives on paper because of glitches in the state's electronic reporting system.
Each petition drive must meet a Feb. 1 deadline to get at least 611,009 signatures of registered voters verified by county supervisors of election to get on the November ballot.
Six initiatives, if they get enough signatures, have been cleared for the ballot by the Florida Supreme Court, but several others have yet to undergo review by the justices. That could be done after the deadline if they get enough signatures.
Supervisors had been electronically reporting their results to the state Division of Elections. The division then has been posting unofficial tallies, updated daily, for each proposed state constitutional amendment on its Web site.
Those numbers were removed from the site Wednesday because of the reporting problems. Browning cited two examples during a conference call with reporters.
