BRADENTON - An HIV-positive mother was arrested on a felony child neglect charge after she failed to take steps to prevent her son from contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
Cecilia Sliker, 36, did not provide the 3-year-old boy necessary medical attention because she did not want the boy's father to know she was HIV-positive, according to a Manatee County sheriff's report.
A doctor at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg said the boy likely would not have contracted human immunodeficiency virus had he been cared for properly since birth, the report said.
Sliker knew how to care for a child in danger of contracting the deadly virus. According to the report, Sliker was diagnosed with HIV before the birth of her first son in 2001.
Sliker followed up with proper care and the older boy did not develop the virus, the report said.
