HUDSON - A musical comedy about male strippers is really a story of friendship and facing fears.
"The Full Monty," written by four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally, with music by Tony Award nominee David Yazbek, is playing through Feb. 24 at the Show Palace Dinner Theatre, 16128 U.S. 19.
The musical is the Americanized version of the 1997 Academy Award-winning British film of the same name.
It follows six unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, N.Y., - standing in for the equally gritty Sheffield, England - as they recognize the popularity of a local male strip show and come up with a bold, and revealing, way to make some cash and help a friend in trouble.
In doing so, they must triumph over their fears, their nerves - and their clothes.
"It's a mixture of comedy and heart," said the production's director, Matthew McGee. "And a bit naughty, too."
The play, which has brief nudity and adult language, stars Vincent D'Elia, Todd M. Eskin, Larry Buzzeo, Damron Russel Armstrong, Tyler Fish and Aaron Wooten.
The musical opened on Broadway in 2000 and ran for 770 performances.
It was nominated for Tony Awards in categories including best musical and best musical score.
Show Palace performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. Sundays.
Doors open two hours before each show for dinner and cocktails.
Tickets are $44 for dinner and the show or $32.95 for just the show. Prices do not include tax.
