GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.
The Anclote power plant has been producing good catches of trout, ladyfish and jacks by bouncing a dark-colored soft plastic jig slowly along the bottom. A few pompano also have been caught on live shrimp and yellow and white pompano jigs.
Captain Mark Gore reports Weedon Island fishing has been picking up with the current good weather. Gore says to fish the back bays and docks for snook, trout and reds. If the warm weather stays around, be sure to check the outside bars and mangroves edges.
The winter trout season has begun in St. Joseph Sound. The spoil islands will be holding big trout, sheepshead and a few pompano. Live shrimp under a cork is the best way to fish around the islands because of the rock bottom. Drift the grass flats with jigs for better numbers of trout but the size may be a little smaller. Trout season is now open in our area.
Captain Chuck Rodgers has been catching mackerel and bluefish around Picnic Island. Rodgers likes to anchor, use a block of frozen chum and fish with live bait. Check the grass flats where you see pelicans diving to catch the live bait.
Captain Bill Miller hosts "Hooked on Fishing" on Thursdays and Sundays from 7-8 p.m., and Fridays and Mondays from 11 a.m.-noon on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
