An Armwood High School student, Jeremiah F. McCasland, 17, was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run that sent a Plant City High School student to a hospital this week.
Joshua Cabbage, 17, was crossing Gallagher Road at 6:27 a.m. Tuesday to reach his bus, which was stopped on northbound Gallagher Road at Todd Place with its stop sign extended and lights activated, Hillsborough County sheriff's officials said.
A dark gray sedan traveling south on Gallagher Road did not stop for the bus and hit Cabbage, breaking his left leg in several places. The car kept going south and last was seen crossing Thonotosassa Road, deputies said.
Cabbage was taken to Tampa General Hospital. His condition was not available.
On Thursday, a sheriff's traffic homicide investigator found a Mitsubishi Gallant belonging to McCasland with damage consistent with the crash. The car was damaged on the right front bumper, passenger door, passenger-side mirror and front passenger window, which was shattered.
McCasland was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious injury. He was processed at the Juvenile Assessment Center and released to the custody of his parents, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
(Due to incorrect information from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, a previous version of this story gave the wrong name of the suspect and indicated that he was arrested on his birthday. The suspect's correct name is Jeremiah F. McCafland.
