Plant junior QB Aaron Murray finished fourth among eight finalists in the voting for the state's Mr. Football Award, the Florida Dairy Farmers announced Thursday.
Murray, who earlier was named the state's Class 4A player of the year after throwing a state-record 51 touchdown passes this season while leading the Panthers to a regional final, finished with 67 total points. Miami Northwestern senior QB Jacory Harris, who tossed 49 touchdowns while leading his team to the Class 6A title, won the award with 119 points. Kissimmee Osceola senior RB Kwamaine "Bubba" Brown finished second with 77 points and Justin Feagin of Delray Beach American Heritage was third with 73.
Former Plant QB Robert Marve won the award last season.
Miami Northwestern's Billy Rolle was named the state's coach of the year by the same organization. Armwood coach Sean Callahan, who was up for the award after earlier being named the Class 4A coach of the year, finished sixth in the voting among eight finalists.
In other news, Middleton senior RB Carlton "Ty" Jones was selected as one of dozens of high school football players from around the country to be named an Old Spice Red Zone High School Football Player of the Year.
Jones is now nominated to be included in a final list of the top 50 Red Zone Players of the Year, who will be featured in an ad in a magazine. Previous winners include Tim Tebow and Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell.
Jones finished the season with 1,228 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.
BASEBALL: Former Hillsborough utilityman Orlando Bacon has signed with North Florida.
Bacon, who as a senior helped the Terriers to the Class 5A state title game in 2006, originally signed with Bethune-Cookman out of high school but left the Wildcats' program after one season and transferred to Lake City Community College, according to a release from North Florida's athletic office. Bacon signed with the Ospreys, a Division-I program that competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference, during the early signing period in December.
Also, Mitchell P/IF Ryan Garton was selected to participate in the Under Armour Pre-Season All-America and the Under Armour Southeast Regional Wood Bat tournaments.
The Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament will be held at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz., allowing more than 200 high school players to compete in front of major-league scouts.
Past participants include Tampa Bay Rays OF B.J. Upton and New York Mets IF David Wright.
Garton's performance at an Under Armour National Team Tryout in Tampa earned him a place on the invitation-only Baseball Factory team. That event will take place on June 5-11 at the Roger Dean Sports Complex in Jupiter, the spring training home of the St. Louis Cardinals.
During the Under Armour National Tryout, Garton had one of the top fastballs, hitting 89 mph and also ran 6.91 seconds in the 60- yard dash.
INDUCTEES HONORED: Lakewood inducted its newest class into the school's Sports Hall of Fame in ceremonies during the Boca Ciega-Lakewood boys basketball game Thursday.
Included in the induction class were the 1970 state champion baseball team, basketball player Lynn Norenberg Barry and football players Tom Carter and William Floyd.
