Dennis Kucinich, a former mayor of Cleveland and seven-term representative, reprised his role of die-hard anti-war activist in the 2008 campaign – the same role he played in 2004 when he ran for his party's nomination against John Kerry.
Kucinich, some will remember, attempted to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney for war crimes and continues to campaign for the impeachment of President Bush. He commands a small but zealous group of supporters, but his credibility in the campaign is dinged by his often cartoonish antics. He once told loopy actress Shirley MacClaine that he had seen a UFO. And at Christmas time, he raised money for his campaign by selling old Palm Beach County voting machines from the dysfunctional 2000 election.
When it comes to the issues, Kucinich is less amusing. He would create a government-run universal health-care system, withdraw U.S. troops from all foreign bases and no longer involve America in defending its allies around the globe. His extremist positions make his candidacy difficult to take seriously.
