TAMPA - University of South Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney will interview today for the head coaching position with the University of South Alabama, The Tampa Tribune has learned.
The Jaguars are starting a football program in 2009 with plans to move to Division I-A by 2013.
McCarney, who could not be reached for comment, was a head coach for 12 seasons at Iowa State. He led the Cyclones to five bowl games in his final seven years before coming to USF this season.
South Alabama athletic director Joe Gottfried told the Mobile (Ala.) Press-Register that former Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower and former Tulane coach Chris Scelfo already have interviewed. Auburn running backs coach Eddie Gran and Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele also have interviewed, The Birmingham News reported.
Earlier this month, McCarney was among two finalists for the Northern Illinois job. McCarney withdrew from consideration and NIU hired Southern Illinois' Jerry Kill.

McFadden Handcuffed After Nightclub Incident
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Heisman Trophy runner-up Darren McFadden was handcuffed by police and then released without charges after being involved in a "pretty rowdy scene" at a piano bar early Thursday.
Arkansas' All-America running back and at least four others were at the downtown bar when a disturbance broke out shortly after midnight, police Lt. Terry Hastings said. A bouncer was hit in the face as he was trying to get the group to leave, Hastings said. A police report did not specify who hit the bouncer.
Outside, McFadden was handcuffed by a police officer "because he was agitated and was provoking aggressive behavior inciting the incident," according to the police report.
McFadden, the only person handcuffed, was released after he calmed down. Hastings said it was routine procedure to handcuff a person to gain control of a situation.
DRAFT ENTRANTS: Rashard Mendenhall is leaving Illinois to enter the NFL draft, adding another top prospect to a deep class of running backs.
Wide receivers Malcolm Kelly (Oklahoma) and Earl Bennett (Vanderbilt) were among the other players who announced they will pass up their remaining eligibility. Clemson defensive end Phillip Merling is turning pro as well.
West Virginia wideout Darius Reynaud also will turn pro, according to a person in the school's athletic department.
WASHINGTON: A University of Washington booster offered $200,000 for law school scholarships if Coach Ty Willingham and Athletic Director Todd Turner were fired, The Seattle Times reported.
The offer made by Ed Hansen, a multimillionaire lawyer and former three-term mayor of Everett, Wash., to university president Mark A. Emmert was included in about 1,000 e-mails obtained by the Times in a public records request.
Turner was credited with restoring integrity to the Huskies' athletic programs before he resigned Dec. 11, six days after Emmert retained Willingham, who has an 11-25 record in three seasons at the school.
