Long before most people knew of Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson expected to capture the support of the Republican Party's evangelical wing. The former Tennessee senator is pro-life, against gun control, favors tax cuts and supports a strong military. But because Thompson took so long to get into the race, Huckabee was able to seize the "most conservative" mantle and run past him. When Thompson finally did enter the race, he appeared sluggish and ill-prepared.
Thompson was at his best in Des Moines when, during the debate, he refused to answer a "raise-your-hand" question asked of the group. He showed himself to be a leader among peers, but the moment was all too rare.
For all the build-up, Thompson has proven to be a flat and uninspiring candidate.
