Bubba's New Program Brings Familiar Complaints

Just Turn Off Radio

Regarding "Beware Return Of Love Sponge To Airwaves" (Other Views, Jan. 8):

After reading David Caton's guest column, I thought of a few things Mr. Caton does not seem to be aware of.

One is the First Amendment to the Bill of Rights. I admit that censorship has its proponents; for example, Mao, Hitler and Stalin seemed to like it. This, however, is the United States, and we have a tradition of defending free speech here. Yes, David, even speech we don't like.

Another thing Mr. Caton and his organization missed is the fact that I didn't leave him in charge of deciding my radio content. It seems clear that he thinks he is in charge, so let me clear up that misunderstanding.

I am over 18 and do not require you to censor the radio for me. Without the burden of having to play thought police, this family association and Mr. Caton may have time to pursue more productive hobbies, like minding their own business.

Finally, these censors seemed to have missed a very important feature on their radio. That would be the "off" button. If you don't like what you hear - and I will say this slowly so you don't miss anything - turn ... off ... the ... radio.

By the way, if you are worried about what your kids hear on the radio, there is a neat technique that requires less effort than censorship. It is called parenting. Try it sometime.

Take A Stand For Values

Thanks to David Caton of the Florida Family Association for bringing to my attention that Cox Enterprises is bringing Bubba the Love Sponge back to the air waves.

On the Cox Enterprises Web site, two of their values state: "Our customers are our lifeblood. We're dedicated to building lasting relationships with them and meeting their needs with high-quality service beyond their expectations," and "We are committed to helping shape a better world through responsible company and individual actions." I believe that in sponsoring Bubba the Love Sponge, they are not only letting down their customers but they are not "helping shape a better world." I have sent them a letter to this effect, and I hope that they receive enough negative responses that they will reconsider this decision.

I have also sent a copy of that letter to the following local Cox Enterprises radio stations: 105.5 WDUV, 102.5 The Bone, 101.5 The Point, 97X, Magic 94.9, WWRM the Christian station (!), and 107.3 The Eagle. We must make a stand to defend responsible values and sensibilities.

Welcome Back, Bubba

Regarding "Bubba Back With Bone To Pick" (Metro, Jan. 9):

I was very happy to hear the return of Bubba The Love Sponge to the Tampa airwaves on Tuesday morning. He is simply the best in the business.

I am, however, disappointed to see that all these local agencies and watchdog groups are already expecting Bubba to fail. Whatever happened to second chances?

I think a lot of people have nothing better to do that try to make a local celebrity a target. The last time I checked, all radios have a button to change the station. If you don't like it, change the station.

Then I hear people talking about their kids listening to him. Bubba is for adults, not kids. Before you are so quick to jump on the content of Bubba's show, check some of the rap music your kids have in their MP3 players.

Bubba, we love you and are glad to have you back!
