A police pursuit in Port Richey late Friday night ended when the fleeing pickup slammed head on onto another car on U.S. 19, injuring both drivers.

The names of those injured were not immediately available. Port Richey police gave this account:

At 10:16 p.m. Friday, Pasco County sheriff's deputies were investigating a traffic crash when one of the damaged vehicles, a red Nissan pickup, fled the scene. Deputies notified Port Richey police the truck was headed into the city.

The truck was speeding when it crossed into the city on U.S. 19, heading south. Officer Billy Cabiness followed the truck and used a traffic device to change the lights to green to keep crossing traffic out of the way.

The truck passed through the Ridge Road intersection and then crossed over into the northbound lanes and struck another vehicle head on just north of the Grand Boulevard intersection.

Police said both drivers were taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital. The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for two hours, police said. No charges were immediately filed.
