TAMPA - Julian Crockett scored on a low shot with less than two minutes left in the first half to lead Berkeley Prep to a 2-1 victory against Tampa Prep in Saturday's Headmasters' Challenge.
"This win was a great confidence booster going into the last week of the regular season," Crockett said. "The competition level with Tampa Prep is always great between us, the intensity is always up and it's a great win."
Berkeley Prep opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when T.J. Roehn converted a direct free kick, looping his shot over the Terrapins' defensive wall.
The Terrapins evened the match 12 minutes later when Ryan Griffin scored on a penalty kick. Griffin sent Buccaneers keeper Alex Jenkins the wrong way, shooting low into the right side of the net.
Jenkins had 10 saves in the match. The Terrapins' Brad Sienkiewicz also had a strong game in goal with eight saves.
Injuries hampered the Terrapins, as leading scorer Wes Sever and defenders Chris Friedrich, Sean Regin and Wes Wall did not play. They were joined on the sideline by Terps leading scorer Anthony Baumann in the 24th minute; he left with an apparent leg injury and didn't return.
In girls soccer, Paige Goodwin scored a hat trick, leading Tampa Prep to a 4-0 win against Berkeley Prep.
The Terrapins led 2-0 at the half, with Goodwin's first two goals assisted by Taylor Richardson and Chelsea Klotz. Goodwin scored the Terrapins' first goal of the second half on an impressive header after a nice cross from Connor Zwetsch.
Tampa Prep's final goal came by Richardson after a pass from Megan Wall.
In wrestling action earlier Saturday, Tampa Prep defeated Berkeley 48-18.
