LEXINGTON, Ky. - Freshman Patrick Patterson had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lift Kentucky to a 79-73 double-overtime win over No. 13 Vanderbilt on Saturday, stealing back some of the luster missing from the historic program.
Ramel Bradley added 20 points, and Joe Crawford had 17 for Kentucky (7-7, 1-0), which gave Coach Billy Gillispie a win in his Southeastern Conference debut.
Shan Foster had 20 points for Vanderbilt (16-1, 1-1), which started the day as one of five unbeaten teams in Division I. A.J. Ogilvy struggled early for Vanderbilt, but ended with 16 points and five rebounds to help the Commodores overcome a 16-point deficit.
Bradley's jumper in the second overtime put Kentucky ahead 77-73, clinching the first win over a ranked opponent this season.
No. 5 UCLA Beats No. 4 Washington State
LOS ANGELES - Fifth-ranked UCLA knocked No. 4 Washington State from the unbeaten ranks with an 81-74 victory led by freshman Kevin Love's eighth double-double of the season.
Love had a career-high 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Darren Collison added 18 points.
The Bruins (16-1, 4-0 Pac-10) won their ninth in a row and seventh straight over the Cougars.
Derrick Low scored 24 points after getting nothing in the first half for Washington State, which saw its best start in 91 years ended.
The Cougars (14-1, 2-1) have just one victory in 51 games at UCLA.
UNC 93, N.C. STATE 62: Deon Thompson and Ty Lawson each scored 16 points for No. 1 North Carolina (17-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), which scored 25 straight points in the first half.
Courtney Fells had 16 points to lead N.C. State (11-4, 0-1).
MEMPHIS 68, MARSHALL 45: Freshman Derrick Rose scored 19 points and No. 2 Memphis (15-0, 2-0 Conference USA) used a hot start to the second half to beat Marshall (9-5, 1-1).
KANSAS 79, NEBRASKA 58: Brandon Rush scored 16 of his season-high 19 points in the first half and third-ranked Kansas continued its domination over Nebraska.
The three-time defending Big 12 champion Jayhawks (16-0) won their 17th straight conference opener.
The victory was the Jayhawks' ninth straight against Nebraska (11-3, 0-1) and 18th in the last 19 meetings.
IOWA 43, MICHIGAN ST. 36: Tony Freeman scored 22 points and lowly Iowa (8-9, 1-3 Big Ten) stunned No. 6 Michigan State (14-2, 2-1), snapping the Spartans' 11-game winning streak.
GEORGETOWN 72, UCONN 69: Roy Hibbert's uncontested 3-pointer with 4 seconds left snapped a tie and capped his 20-point, eight-rebound performance for No. 7 Georgetown (13-1, 3-0 Big East).
Jeff Adrien led Connecticut (11-4, 2-2) with 18 points.
The Huskies were without Coach Jim Calhoun, who missed an entire game for the first time since February 2003. The Hall of Famer was at the arena but stayed in the coaches' locker room at tip-off because of flulike symptoms.
TENNESSEE 80, S. CAROLINA 56: JaJuan Smith scored 15 points to lead No. 8 Tennessee (14-1, 2-0) over South Carolina (8-8, 0-2).
TEXAS A&M 86, COLORADO 69: Dominique Kirk scored 15 points and freshman DeAndre Jordan added 14 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 11 Texas A&M (15-1, 1-0 Big 12) to its eighth straight win by at least 15 points.
Colorado (8-7) lost its 11th straight Big 12 opener.
MISSOURI 97, TEXAS 84: Reserve Keon Lawrence scored a season-high 18 points to lead six Missouri (11-5) players in double figures in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
Damion James led No. 12 Texas (13-3) with 27 points, and A.J. Abrams had 21.
BUTLER 72, WIS.-MILWAUKEE 56: Freshman Matt Howard scored nine of his 17 points during a 14-0 first-half run that carried No. 14 Butler (16-1, 5-1 Horizon League) to its eighth straight victory.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee (9-8, 4-3) had its six-game winning streak snapped.
MARQUETTE 92, NOTRE DAME 66: Jerel McNeal had 18 points, and No. 15 Marquette (13-2, 3-1 Big East) handed Notre Dame its biggest loss in the teams' 109-game rivalry.
The defeat was the first for the Fighting Irish (12-3, 2-1) since Nov. 19 and snapped their 10-game winning streak.
Luke Harangody tied his career high with 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Notre Dame.
MISSISSIPPI 74, LSU 71: Eniel Polynice and Chris Warren both scored 15 points, and No. 16 Mississippi (14-1, 1-1 SEC) escaped with a victory over undermanned LSU (7-9, 0-2).
Marcus Thornton scored 25 points, Anthony Randolph had 18 and Garrett Temple added 16 for LSU, which was without two starters due to injuries and dressed only nine players.
DAYTON 68, SAINT LOUIS 57: Brian Roberts scored 30 points and No. 17 Dayton (14-1, 2-0 Atlantic 10) held off Saint Louis (9-7, 0-2) in overtime for the Flyers' 13th straight victory.
CINCINNATI 69, VILLANOVA 66: Rashad Bishop's 3-pointer with 22 seconds to play - the freshman forward's only basket of the game - rallied Cincinnati (8-8, 3-1 Big East) over No. 19 Villanova (11-3, 1-2).
PITT 84, SETON HALL 70: Sam Young scored 28 points and freshman DeJuan Blair had 20 points and 14 rebounds for No. 20 Pittsburgh (14-2, 2-1 Big East).
Brian Laing had 17 points for the Pirates (10-6, 0-3) but he left the game early in the second half with an injury, and that's when the Panthers began to pull away.
XAVIER 68, FORDHAM 50: B.J. Raymond made his first five 3-point shots and finished with 20 points to lead No. 24 Xavier (14-3, 2-0 Atlantic 10) to its sixth straight win.
Bryant Dunston had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Fordham (6-8, 0-2), which was held to a season-low point total.
MIAMI 78, GEORGIA TECH 68: Sophomore James Dews scored a career-high 18 points and junior Jimmy Graham matched a career high with 13 for No. 25 Miami (14-1, 1-0 Big East), which fell behind by 12 points early and then went on a 31-11 run.
Jeremis Smith had a season-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Georgia Tech (7-8, 0-2). It has been six years since the Yellow Jackets had such a poor overall record this late in the season.
FLA. TECH 84, TAMPA 67: Rashad Callaway led Tampa (9-3, 3-1 Sunshine State Conference) with 17 points, and Chris Evans added 15 points and nine rebounds in a losing cause.
SAINT LEO 65, LYNN 61: Kyle Rowland scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Lions (7-6, 1-2) to their first Sunshine State Conference win of the season.
