A Plant City man sneaked into his ex-girlfriend's room while she slept and beat her head and body with a 2-foot-long club, Hillsborough County deputies say.
Gustavo Gonsales
Deputies arrested Gustavo Gonsales, 44, Sunday night in Wimauma.
About 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, Gonsales broke a light outside the woman's home at 907 Fourth St., Wimauma, entered her bedroom through a window and beat her while she slept, a criminal arrest affidavit states.
The victim, 43-year-old Olga Castellano, awoke when the attack began but was knocked unconscious, the affidavit states. Gonsales fled in his vehicle after being interrupted by her roommate.
She was taken to South Bay Hospital.
Gonsales, of 1402 Wheeler St., had threatened his ex-girlfriend with physical violence the night of the attack, according to the affidavit.
He was upset because she broke up with him, a sheriff's office report states.
Deputies say they found him in the driver's seat of a 1991 Chevrolet pickup when he was detained for questioning. The vehicle was running, and Gonsales did not have a valid driver's license, they said.
Gonsales was charged Sunday with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, armed burglary of a dwelling and not having a valid driver's license.
He was in Orient Road Jail this morning. No bail had been set.
