Published: January 14, 2008

Rap artist R. Kelly was scheduled to appear in court in Chicago today to face charges he videotaped sex acts with a minor girl in or before 2000.

Kelly was acquitted of child pornography charges in Polk County in 2004 after a judge ruled evidence there was seized illegally.

Kelly, who has pleaded not guilty to the Illinois charges, avoided having his bail revoked Dec. 21 but was admonished by a judge for missing a court date a few days earlier.

Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan set a trial date of May 9 for the 40-year-old artist, whose case has been delayed numerous times since he was charged in 2002.

Kelly missed the court appearance after his tour bus was delayed in Utah because its logbooks didn't document enough rest time for the driver. The bus had been stopped for speeding.

The judge also ordered Kelly, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, to cancel a concert in Hampton, Va., on Sunday to ensure he is in Chicago for court today.

In March 2004, prosecutors in Polk County dropped all child pornography charges against R. Kelly after Circuit Judge Dennis Maloney ruled that photos said to show the singer having sex with an underage girl were seized illegally.

The charges were dropped after Maloney agreed with Kelly's attorneys that detectives did not have enough evidence to justify a search of Kelly's Davenport home when deputies asked a judge for a warrant in June 2002.

The photographs were on a digital camera wrapped in a towel inside a duffel bag.
