Three candidates have applied to fill the state Department of Corrections' top post.
Department Secretary Jim McDonough plans to step down. He might leave the position by month's end, Gov. Charlie Crist said.
Two applicants come from within the department; the other is a former commissioner of Massachusetts' corrections department.
Someone likely will be chosen within days, Crist said.
"He's been a tremendous public servant," Crist said of McDonough. "I think the world of the secretary and always wish him well in whatever endeavors he wishes to pursue. He's just done a great job and is a tremendous man of integrity."
The applicants are:
•Kathleen M. Dennehy, Massachusetts' corrections commissioner from April 2004 to May. She is superintendent of security operations for the Bristol (Mass.) County Sheriff's Office.
•Bruce D. Grant, assistant secretary of Florida's corrections department since 2007. He supervises more than 3,500 probation officers and staff members. From 2005 to 2006, he was deputy director of a provincial reconstruction team in Iraq.
•George B. Sapp, assistant secretary of institutions for the corrections department since October 2004. He was deputy assistant secretary of administration for the department from July 2003 through 2004.
