Britney Spears went to a courthouse Monday but abruptly left amid a swarm of paparazzi without attending a hearing in her child-custody battle with her ex-husband, missing a chance to try to persuade a commissioner to restore her visitation rights to her two little boys.
Instead, the Superior Court commissioner heard a day of closed-door testimony from Kevin Federline and witnesses to a bizarre situation this month in which police took the pop singer to a hospital after a standoff in her home when she refused to return the boys to Federline's bodyguard after a visit.
Commissioner Scott Gordon then ruled that a Jan. 4 emergency order suspending her visitation rights and giving custody to Federline would remain in effect. He scheduled another hearing for Feb. 19.
"The word victory is not something Mr. Federline or his counsel would ascribe to this. There is no joy. This is a grave situation for all," Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, said outside the courthouse.
Collins Reports To Jail For 4-Day Sentence
Gary Collins checked into jail Monday to serve a four-day sentence in his drunken driving case.
The 69-year-old TV personality and actor chose to pay an $85 daily fee to stay in the Glendale City Jail instead of the overcrowded Los Angeles County Jail, according to the Glendale Police Department.
Collins pleaded no contest Dec. 6 to one misdemeanor count each of driving under the influence and driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more in a traffic crash in Sherman Oaks.
He also must serve four years' probation upon his release and pay a $500 fine.
Entertainers Cited In Steroid Probe
A number of entertainers were named in connection with an Albany, N.Y.-based steroid investigation, but they are not part of an ongoing criminal probe, according to a published report.
The Times Union of Albany cited unidentified law enforcement officials in reporting Sunday that R&B music star Mary J. Blige, rap musicians 50 Cent, Timbaland and Wyclef Jean, and award-winning author and producer Tyler Perry may have received or used performance-enhancing drugs.
Law enforcement officials have said evidence does not indicate that the celebrities broke the law, but that investigators are focusing on doctors, pharmacists and clinics that provide the drugs.
Albany District Attorney P. David Soares launched the investigation into steroid trafficking last year.
Screenwriter Charged In Fatal Crash
Oscar-winning screenwriter Roger Avary has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence after a Ventura County, Calif., car crash that killed a man and injured Avary's wife, authorities said.
Avary, 42, was the driver in the single-car crash shortly after midnight Sunday in Ojai, said Capt. Ross Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.
Killed in the accident was Andreas Zini, 34, a resident of Italy who was apparently visiting the couple. Firefighters cut Zini from the car and he died several hours later at Ventura County Medical Center.
