ST. LEO - A month away from the Sunshine State Conference meet, Saint Leo's men's and women's swimming teams tuned up with convincing dual-meet victories against Florida Southern on Saturday in their home finales.

The women won 108-71; the men 96-75. Both squads captured six events apiece, including two individual victories by three different swimmers: former Land O' Lakes High star Tim Olson (200-yard individual medley, 100 backstroke), junior Donnie Maclary (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and sophomore Julie Curusone (200 IM, 100 breaststroke).

The Lions also excelled in the freestyle events. In addition to Maclary's win in the 200, freshman Matt Szabunio won the 50 and another first-year swimmer, Matt Attal, won the 1,000. The women scored victories in the 100 (sophomore Erin Lucas) and 200 (sophomore Erin Hotchkiss).
Saint Leo will return to action in Tampa on Saturday at 11 a.m. to face Rollins and the Spartans.

ATHLETES HONORED: A total of 41 athletes were named to the university's President's Club, which recognizes academic achievements for the top 15 percent of student athletes, for the recently concluded fall semester.

Seven of those athletes earned perfect 4.0 grade point averages. They include softball player Leslie Brewer, baseball player Ryan Clark, men's basketball player Thomas Kaiser, men's cross country runner and swimmer Javier Beuzeville, tennis player Taylor Cleaves, and swimmers Elizabeth Casey and Jessica Pall.

STREAMING ALL SPRING: Saint Leo announced plans last week for audio broadcasts of 56 events this spring on its Web site, www.saintleolions.com, beginning with the baseball team's home opener against West Florida on Feb. 10. Softball and lacrosse also will be featured.

The schedule consists mostly of road games, though a few home dates will be covered.

Twenty baseball games will be broadcast, including the three-game Sunshine State Conference series against defending national champion Tampa (at home), as well as against Barry, Lynn and Nova Southeastern.

All road and neutral-site softball games will be covered, in addition to three home doubleheaders and one single home contest - a total of 32 games. For lacrosse, one home match (vs. Dominican College on March 20) and three road contests, including the final trip against Catawba and Wingate, will be aired.

The broadcasts are free, subject to change and can also be downloaded off the Web site approximately 48 hours after each event. Currently, the Saint Leo athletic department broadcasts all road basketball games against SSC opponents.
