River Ridge senior Michelle McKonly will play softball at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville.

"I'm going to be doing the zoology program and then hopefully transferring to Florida after that," McKonly said. "It's kind of cool because that's where I wanted to go to begin with."

McKonly, who plays first base for the Royal Knights, hit .522 with 10 doubles, six triples, two home runs and 28 RBIs. Defensively, she collected 155 putouts and had a .978 fielding percentage.

"Great work habit," River Ridge softball coach Ernie Beck said. "Good student, great work habit. She'll get dirty during practice, she's a hard worker and very coachable."

VOLLEYBALL OPENING: For the second consecutive season, the Pasco volleyball team will usher in a season with a new head coach. Following one season at the helm of the Pirates squad, coach Pat Hobart resigned. The opening was posted this week, according to Athletic Director Jim Ward.

Hobart, former JV volleyball coach at Hernando, was hired in August to coach the volleyball team and girls weightlifting team. She replaced Ramiro Tejada, who left to open the Sunlake volleyball program. Tejada coached the Pirates for five seasons.

INJURY UPDATE: Following a CAT scan on Mitchell wrestler Anthony Ayers, it was determined he suffered a severe muscle strain.

Ayers was injured during his 112-pound bout for third place against Crystal River's Brandon Jones. Ayers was thrown earlier in the match and landed on his neck, causing a brief injury timeout. Later in the match, Jones threw Ayers again, this time causing him to land on his head, neck and shoulder, injuring his back, according to Mitchell coach John Stanjeski.

After stopping the match, Jones was disqualified for what officials deemed an illegal throw. Ayers, who remained on the mat practically motionless for at least 10 minutes, was taken to a Spring Hill Regional Hospital for evaluation.
