BROOKSVILLE - Longtime Hernando County School Board member and Vice Chairman Jim Malcolm has announced he will not seek a fifth term.
Malcolm, of Brooksville, will have held the District 4 seat for 16 years when he steps down in November.
"It's just time," he said. "Sixteen years is a long time, and I haven't lost my passion for what it is I'm doing — it's just time to retire."
Malcolm said his wife, Loise, a registered nurse, also is ready to retire.
"Holding elective office is a partnership, and you can't do it without your spouse," he said. "I'll be 65 in July. Isn't that when people are supposed to retire?"
Before joining the board, Malcolm spent 11 years as a teacher, and he was Brooksville's city manager in the early 1990s.
Three people have filed to run for his seat: Spring Hill engineer Robert Neuhausen; Spring Hill insurance agent James Yant; and Masaryktown waitress, college student and mother Courtney Rinier.
