LARGO - A Largo man was arrested this morning on charges he was drunk when his pickup struck a scooter last month, killing the 84-year-old riding it, police said.
Angus T. Davis III, 59, was charged with driving-under-the-influence manslaughter. Bail was set at $150,000.
On Dec. 12, Davis' pickup struck a mobility scooter in the 900 block of Missouri Avenue, killing Jack Schaffer of Largo, Lt. Mike Loux said. Davis had two passengers.
The investigation revealed that Schaffer was crossing the street properly when Davis' pickup struck him, Loux said. It also revealed that Davis' blood-alcohol level was 0.348 – more than four times 0.08, which is the level at which a driver in Florida is presumed impaired.
When Davis was arrested at his home at 10 a.m. today, officers found he had been drinking, Loux said. Since the crash, Davis' pickup had been impounded, and he constantly was calling the police department to see when he could get it back, Loux said.
