Published: January 16, 2008

A biography and 4-year-old video of Tom Cruise are calling attention to the actor's belief in Scientology.

Andrew Morton, author of "Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography," published Tuesday by St. Martin's Press, says the 45-year-old actor ranks second in command in the Church of Scientology.

The church responded with a 15-page statement, calling the book "a bigoted, defamatory assault replete with lies" and saying Cruise "is a Scientology parishioner and holds no official or unofficial position in the Church hierarchy."

The book's publication comes as a 2004 video of Cruise extolling Scientology's virtues made its way to the Internet.

Cruise is shown speaking in detail about the religion. He discusses his faith while the soundtrack to his "Mission: Impossible" films plays in the background.

"Being a Scientologist, when you drive past an accident, it's not like anyone else; as you drive past, you know you have to do something about it, because you know you're the only one that can really help."

Longoria Throws A Block For Simpson

Eva Longoria has some advice for Jessica Simpson.

Longoria, who is married to San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker, says Simpson is taking unnecessary heat from Dallas Cowboys fans who blame the 27-year-old singer's weekend trip to Mexico with her boyfriend, quarterback Tony Romo, for the Cowboys' defeat by the New York Giants.

"People gave me that ... when I started dating Tony," Longoria, star of ABC's "Desperate Housewives," said in an interview Monday with E! Entertainment Television's "Daily 10."

"Believe me, they are not thinking about us when they're on the court, when they're on the field," she said of Parker and Romo. "It's like they've got a little more important things to do."

Longoria, who wed Parker in July, also shot down speculation she's pregnant.

She will visit Harvard on Feb. 6 to accept her award, said Regent Releasing, the company that's distributing her new comedy, "The Hottie & the Nottie."

Hilton, whose body of work includes "House of Wax" and TV's "The Simple Life," stars as the attractive best friend to an ugly duckling in the new comedy, slated for release Feb. 8.

Harlow Winter Kate Madden was born Friday in Los Angeles, weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces. She is the first child for Madden, 28, and Richie, 26. The couple began dating in late 2006.
