MELBOURNE, Australia - Every previous time Rafael Nadal has played the Australian Open, he's gone deeper into the tournament than the time before.
He advanced to the third round today after a 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 win against Frenchman Florent Serra.
Nadal has been ranked No. 2 for the past three seasons and is the only player to beat top-ranked Roger Federer in the past 10 Grand Slams - in the finals at Roland Garros the past two years.
Meanwhile, win No. 30 in Justine Henin's current streak gave her a few things to work on in her next match.
The top-ranked Henin, who skipped Melbourne last year because she was going through a divorce and had to default in the 2006 final because of a stomach illness, needed four match points to clinch today's 6-1, 7-5 second-round win against Russian Olga Poutchkova.
She was broken at love when serving for the match at 5-3, then set up double match point with a curling forehand winner in the next game before Poutchkova ran off four points to level at 5-5.
