TAMPA - TAMPA - A 37-year-old man posing as a landlord pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing more than $40,000 in grant money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Brian Montgomery, of Tampa, posed as a bogus landlord in the Tampa Housing Authority's Housing Choice Voucher/Section 8 program from June 2004 to Jan. 2005, according to the U.S. State Attorney for the Middle District of Florida.
Montgomery admitted to receiving nine fraudulent rental subsidy payments totaling $42,480. He has been ordered to pay restitution. Montgomery is one of thirteen people charged in December with theft of federal housing subsidy payments.
Three former employees of the THA recruited friends and family members to act as bogus landlords in order to get the rent payments, according to indictments.
Montgomery faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
