Nobody could have seen this celebrity breakup coming: After more than 20 years of marriage, Spider-Man and Mary Jane are kaput.
Joe Quesada, editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, said it was time to shake things up in the life of Peter Parker, the nerdy New Yorker who after being bitten by a radioactive spider transformed himself into a web-spinning world savior. And it was easier to do that, he said, if Parker wasn't married.
"When we first did it, the reaction was, 'How could you do this? This is a terrible thing to do,'" said Quesada, who invented the storyline that turned Spider-Man into Single-Man. "But with the first issue of 'Brand New Day' this week's comic book in which Spider-Man returns to single life, our letters very quickly changed to people saying, 'This is fantastic. This is the Spider-Man we remembered. We didn't know what we'd been missing.'"
Judge Orders DMX To Pay $1.5 Million
DMX has been ordered to pay $1.5 million to the mother of his child after the rapper-actor failed to appear in court to defend himself against allegations of defamation.
DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was sued by Monique Wayne for defamation of character after he allegedly told a magazine that Wayne raped him during a 2003 hotel stay in Baltimore, leading to her pregnancy. Wayne responded by filing a $6 million lawsuit against Simmons in Prince George's County Circuit Court in October 2006.
Judge Thomas Smith ruled in Wayne's favor Friday when Simmons didn't appear at the scheduled court hearing. He ordered Simmons to pay Wayne $518,400 in compensation and $1 million in punitive penalties, according to Wayne's attorney.
Brown Seeks New Hearing - Literally
Foxy Brown is asking to be released from jail so she can go to California for repair of a cochlear implant. Brown's hearing problems were revealed in court in 2004.
Her petition, filed Tuesday in Manhattan's state Supreme Court, says her condition is worsening in jail and she needs to go to a Los Angeles clinic to "have her cochlear implant reprogrammed and repaired or else face imminent harm to her hearing."
Brown was sentenced in September to a year in jail for violating probation, after pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault of two manicurists at a Manhattan nail salon in August 2004.
This Will Be A Tell-All Memoir, By George
In what his publisher calls a record-breaking deal, British pop superstar George Michael is working on a memoir to come out in the fall of 2009. HarperCollins says the book will be an "access all areas" story, with the 44-year-old Michael writing extensively about his professional and personal lives.
A publishing official with knowledge of the negotiations said the deal was worth at least $6 million for British rights, among the biggest publishing contracts ever for that market, and at least $7 million overall.
