No. 1 UNC Escapes Close Call To Stay Undefeated

Barely.
Tyler Hansbrough scored 27 points and made a crucial block in the closing seconds as the top-ranked Tar Heels held on for an 83-82 victory over stubborn Georgia Tech on Wednesday night.
Danny Green put North Carolina (18-0, 3-0 ACC) ahead by making one of two free throws with 22 seconds remaining.

Georgia Tech (7-9, 0-3) had a chance to pull off a monumental upset, but Zack Peacock's shot was blocked by Hansbrough. Peacock retrieved the loose ball and got off a jumper that rimmed out, allowing North Carolina to escape.

Knight Gets 900th Win

LUBBOCK, Texas - Bob Knight reached another milestone.

Texas Tech (10-6, 1-1).beat No. 10 Texas A&M (15-2, 1-1 Big 12) 68-53 on Wednesday night, the Hall of Fame coach's 900th career victory.

"You folks being here, seats being full for a change, really made a difference tonight," Knight told the crowd before leaving the court.

Like when Knight surpassed former North Carolina coach Dean Smith on the Division I career list with win No. 880, he got his 900th on his second try.

MEMPHIS 77, RICE 50: Chris Douglas-Roberts and Doneal Mack both scored 16 points and Joey Dorsey had nine points and 14 rebounds to lead No. 2 Memphis (16-0, 3-0 Conference USA) to a rout of Rice (3-13, 0-3).

Antonio Anderson scored 10 points for the Tigers, who have won 35 consecutive regular-season games.

TEMPLE 78, NO. 20 XAVIER 59: Dionte Christmas scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half and Mark Tyndale added 22 to lead Temple (7-8, 1-1 Atlantic 10) over No. 20 Xavier (14-4, 2-1).

The Owls beat a ranked opponent for the first time in two years.

MASSACHUSETTS 82, DAYTON 71: Ricky Harris scored 22 points and Chris Lowe added 19 to lead Massachusetts (12-4, 1-1 Atlantic 10) over No. 14 Dayton (14-2, 2-1), snapping the Flyers' 13-game winning streak. The Minuteman finished with 13 3-pointers.

VILLANOVA 76, DEPAUL 69: Scottie Reynolds scored 21 points, Antonio Pena had 17 and No. 25 Villanova (12-3, 2-2 Big East) used a late 15-0 run to rally over DePaul (7-9, 3-2) .

The Wildcats trailed by 16 points in the first half and were down seven midway through the second when they went on their game-changing run for yet another big comeback win.

Women's Top 25

WEST VIRGINIA 68, MARQUETTE 63: Olayinka Sanni had 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead No. 14 West Virginia (13-3, 3-1 Big East) win over Marquette (9-7, 1-2) The Mountaineers trailed at halftime at home for the first time before rallying behind Sanni.

OKLAHOMA 80, NEBRASKA 72: Danielle Robinson scored 22 points, Courtney Paris led a second half surge and No. 11Oklahoma (11-3, 2-1 Big 12) eat Nebraska (13-4, 2-1).

Paris had 16 points and 11 rebounds for her 75th straight double-double.

NOTRE DAME 69, VILLANOVA 58: Ashley Barlow scored 16 points, Devereaux Peters had a career-high 15 points and seven steals, and No. 17 Notre Dame (14-3, 2-1 Big East) was 17-for-18 from the free-throw line to beat Villanova (11-6, 1-3) in a turnover-filled game Wednesday night.

GEORGE WASHINGTON 48, RHODE ISLAND 45: Kimberly Bell scored 23 of her career-high 25 points in the second half to help No. 13 George Washington (14-3, 2-0 Atlantic-10) rally against the University of Rhode Island (7-10, 0-2).

BAYLOR 69, KANSAS 35: Rachel Allison scored 11 points to lead No. 6 Baylor (15-1, 3-0 Big 12) over Kansas (11-5, 0-3). Jessica Morrow, returning from a one-game suspension, added 10 points for the Bears

OKLAHOMA STATE 76, MISSOURI 41: Andrea Riley scored 19 points and Taylor Hardeman matched her season high with 16 points to help No. 18 Oklahoma State (15-1, 3-0 Big 12) rout Missouri (8-8, 1-2).

TEXAS 59, IOWA STATE 56: Carla Cortijo scored 13 points, including two key baskets in the final two minutes, and Texas (13-4, 1-2) won its first Big 12 game of the season by beating Iowa State(12-4, 1-2).

UCONN: Starting guard Mel Thomas will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, dealing another blow to the top-ranked Huskies' quest for a sixth national title.

State Women

SAINT LEO 63, FLORIDA SOUTHERN 62: Freshman Whitley Washington made her first field goal of the game, a driving layup with 9.9 seconds left, to snap the Lions' (8-7, 1-3 Sunshine State Conference) 12-game losing streak against conference opponents dating back to last year.

The Moccasins (9-6, 2-3) overcame a 13-point first-half deficit to lead by 8 with 5:22 remaining, but Lions junior Melissa Guerero (18 points) and senior Latasha Lawrence (12 points) led the comeback. Mocs guard Chelsea Johnson led all scorers with 23 points.

TAMPA 68 ECKERD 54: Angela Guiu scored a career-high 24 points and went 7-for-8 from three-point range as the Spartans (11-3, 4-1 SSC) put away the Tritons (9-5, 0-5).Guiu also had three rebounds and three steals in 40 minutes of action.

State Men

FLORIDA SOUTHERN 89, SAINT LEO 80: Rob Eldridge scored 23 points, including three of the Moccasins' 13 3-pointers, and added six assists to defeat the Lions and move to 13-4, 4-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Sophomore Jordan Prais led Saint Leo (7-7, 1-3) with 23 points, while junior Kyle Rowland added 18. But the Lions got no closer than 5 points from the Mocs during the second half. Florida Southern guard Rion Rayfield (20 points) and Brandon Jenkins (14 points) had four 3-pointers each for the Mocs.

ECKERD 80, TAMPA 72: The University of Tampa men's basketball team (9-4, 3-2 SSC) lost its second consecutive game, this time to Eckerd College (10-5, 3-2 SSC), 80-72 in St. Petersburg.

Jonathan Ball led the Spartans with 20 points
