TAMPA - TAMPA - A partnership is in the works between the University of South Florida and Mote Marine Laboratory to strengthen marine science research in Central and Southwest Florida.
Both parties announced today that they are discussing the formation of an organization that would focus on ocean resources and needs.
A final agreement has to be approved by trustees from both institutions.
The joint project would be called the Mote Marine Research Institute at the University of South Florida.
Mote and USF have a long history of collaboration, beginning with red tide research in the 1970s. They also worked together through the Joint Center for Coastal Ocean Studies formed in 2006 that allows for a greater emphasis on understanding coastal and ocean physics, chemistry and biology.
