LAKELAND - A 14-year-old girl was hospitalized this morning after she was bitten by a police dog accidentally released from his handler's vehicle, police said.
The girl's identity and the severity of her injuries were not immediately known.
Lakeland Police Department spokesman Jack Gillen said the girl was not being pursued by police, who had responded to a report of a disturbance at 1440 N. Lincoln Ave.
It was not clear whether the girl lives at that address.
Gillen said the police dog was secure in the back of his handler's patrol car when it arrived at the scene. The dog's handler carries a device that remotely can open the door of the patrol car and free the dog.
Somehow, Gillen said, that device was activated and the dog left the patrol car and attacked the girl.
