FORT MYERS — Tampa Prep's next-to-last tuneup for next week's district tournament turned into a rout, as the Terrapins easily defeated Fort Myers Evangelical Christian 3-0 Friday night.
The Terps' leading scorer, Wes Sever, scored all three goals in his first full match in a week. Sever set the tone in the first minute, jamming a shot through ECS goalkeeper Derrick Hackett on the left post. The Terrapins' Jake Peterson assisted on the goal.
"They're usually a quick team and we wanted to get off the starting block early in the game," Tampa Prep head coach Jose DaCosta said. "We had some of our guys back (from injury). We wanted to go up early in the game and control the game and we did that."
Sever scored again four minutes later, as he bent one past Hackett off a pass from Anthony Baumann on the right post in the fifth minute.
Then the match settled down as the Sentinels' defense adjusted to the Terrapins' team speed and put some pressure on Tampa Prep's defense and goalkeeper Brad Sienkiewicz. But of their three shots on goal in the first half, only one was a quality chance. Sienkiewicz turned away Sam Lunsford's indirect penalty kick in the 12th minute.
The Sentinels had one great chance to end the shutout late in the game, but Hunter Feinberg kicked Thomas Lunsford's brilliant cross right into Sienkiewicz's arms.
The Terps end their regular season Saturday at Fort Myers Bishop Verot at 11 a.m.
