TALLAHASSEE - Florida State's quest to find a permanent athletic director to replace Dave Hart took a step forward Thursday when the school's advisory search committee finalized plans to start interviewing candidates.
The first three candidates the school will interview are Wayne Hogan, Martin Mayhew and Don Smiley. Hogan, a former FSU athletic department administrator who is now at Georgia Tech, and Mayhew, currently an executive with the Detroit Lions, are both FSU graduates. Smiley is former president of the Florida Marlins.
Hart's 13-year tenure ended Dec. 31 and his former post will be filled by Bill Proctor until a permanent replacement is hired. Interviews are scheduled to begin later this month and will include additional candidates supplied by NCAA hiring specialist Chuck Neinas, who is assisting FSU's 24-member search committee.
Neinas said earlier this week that he doesn't anticipate FSU having problems hiring a new athletic director despite a looming NCAA investigation centered on a highly publicized academic misconduct case involving more than 50 student-athletes.
"It's an attractive position," Neinas said. "Florida State is one of the premiere athletic director jobs in the country. The entire package, from their support, facilities, revenue streams, and the interest the university has in the athletic program."
