NORTH PORT – The man charged with kidnapping a 21-year-old woman on Thursday appears to be a Michigan native with no record of arrests in Florida or elsewhere, public records show.

Police arrested Michael Lee King, 37, about 9 p.m. Thursday in connection with the disappearance of Denise Amber Lee. Both are from the same area of North Port.

King was charged this morning with one count of kidnapping with intent to facilitate or commit a felony and booked into the Sarasota County Jail about 8 a.m.

Public records show King has a Michigan driver's license that expires in 2012. As of 2007, he had listed addresses in Sandusky, Mich., and Homosassa as well as North Port, records show.

A check of national criminal databases and Florida Department of Law Enforcement records found no history of arrests.

Records show King filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in eastern Michigan in 1998.

A mortgage foreclosure was filed Jan. 7 against him in Sarasota County, records show.

King has had four traffic tickets in Sarasota County but none since 2005, records show.

There has been no response to phone messages left with several people in Michigan whom public records list as relatives of King.

Police said King is an unemployed plumber and an outdoorsman.

Public records show two fiberglass boats, one 7 feet long and one 13 feet long, are registered in his name.
