Published: January 18, 2008

Gulf running back David Williams burst onto the local prep football scene his senior year and the rest of the state took notice as Williams was named to the first team on the Florida Sports Writers Association's Class 3A all-state football team as a utility player on offense.

Williams had 200 carries for 2,092 yards and 27 touchdowns, finishing second in Pasco County to Ridgewood's Byronell Arline.

Williams averaged 10.46 yards per carry and also had 11 receptions for 150 yards and two TDs.

"It was a great year for running backs in the county and I never dreamed he would get first-team all-state especially for a kid that hasn't really played since his freshman year, that's huge," Gulf coach Jay Fulmer said.

Also, Hudson's Sean Scott was an honorable-mention running back on the 3A team. Scott had 188 carries for 1,637 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also had 12 receptions for 262 and two TDs and four 2-point conversions.

River Ridge's Karcinski Suffers Concussion

NEW PORT RICHEY - River Ridge soccer star Eric Karcinski's status for the Class 5A-District 7 tournament is in doubt following a concussion he suffered during Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Hudson.

The senior goalkeeper and midfielder complained of blurry vision and got sick on the sidelines after a clash of heads with the Cobras' Anthony McKinney 90 seconds into the game.

McKinney's forehead was bleeding profusely but he returned to action. Karcinski had to be hospitalized that night, and his parents told Coach Mike McHugh that doctors deemed the concussion severe.

McHugh will wait for doctors to clear Karcinski before making a decision on his availability for the 5A-7 semifinal against Brooksville Central on Wednesday. The winner of that game goes to the regional playoffs.

"Don't get me wrong, it hurts us," McHugh said, "but we've only had two games this season where everybody was at full strength. It's gonna hurt if he doesn't play, but we'll move on. We still have a chance."
