WESLEY CHAPEL - Ashley Anderton took home a special victory Thursday night.
The Zephyrhills High senior took the Unlimited class for her fourth Sunshine Athletic Conference title. She had a 160-pound bench and a 150-pound clean and jerk for a 310-pound total.
"On the bench, I did surprise myself," she said. "I had a 160, and for four years I have been working to do that. I had surgery on my shoulder my sophomore year. I'm pretty pleased. I don't want to hurt my scholarship."
Anderton helped Zephyrhills take second as a team in SAC girls weightlifting competition.
"I was expecting it, but I knew it wouldn't be easy because of the girl from Wesley Chapel Kelly Daugherty," said Zephyrhills High coach Shannon Mathews. "It's Ashley's senior year. It's enough with her shoulder surgery. She has a NCAA Division I softball scholarship riding. We did not want to lose her shoulder. Every girl I have spoken to on my team has had a personal record on the bench."
Anderton has signed a letter-of-intent with Eastern Illinois University to play softball next year. She plays first base and third base for the Bulldogs.
Anderton and Daugherty tied for the title with 310 totals. Anderton won because she weighed less (213 pounds) than Daugherty (224 pounds).
Anderton will protect her shoulder by not trying to qualify for the state meet.
Fellow Bulldog Casey Rogers won the 183-pound class with a 135-pound bench and a 115-pound clean and jerk for 250 pounds total.
Brianna Hooker, Megan Shaun and Natalie Marenghi won weight classes to lead River Ridge to the team title at Wiregrass Ranch High.
River Ridge won with 59 points. Zephyrhills was second with 51. Ridgewood, 2007's winner, was third with 39 points.
"Our girls lifted real well," said River Ridge coach Mike DeGennaro. "I think every girl I brought, except one, scored points. Jessica Diaz did a great job. Bri bumped up a weight class and won that. A lot of the girls came through. This is our second SAC team title. We normally come in second."
Hooker, a junior, took her third conference title, winning the 119-pound class. Hooker, who was fourth in the state last year, had a 145-pound lift in the bench press and a 135-pound clean and jerk for a 280-pound total. Hooker has never lost a weightlifting meet, but she was uncertain whether or not she would lift. She is hoping for a collegiate gymnastics scholarship, and she had to make time for both sports.
Hooker treasures the conference title.
"It's the most important meet of the whole season because you get your school placed," she said. "I'm glad I chose to lift. It's nice to be here. I do gymnastics. Weightlifting is important to me. I love it. It is also benefiting my gymnastics."
The top two lifters in each class earned all-conference honors.
