Ridgewood Players 2nd-Team All-State

Two of Ridgewood's top football players were named to the Class 4A all-state football team.

Running back Byronell Arline, who set Pasco County records for career rushing yards and yards and touchdowns in a season, was named to the second team.
Arline finished the season with 226 carries for 2,188 yards and 35 touchdowns.

St. Petersburg Northeast's Jeff Brinson and Okeechobee's Lonnie Pryor were the first-team running backs.

Ridgewood linebacker Ben Perry was named to the second-team defense. Perry led the county in tackles with 166 and added six sacks.

GETTING INTEREST: Gulf lineman Steve Reid is set to visit Brown University this weekend, Buccaneers coach Jay Fulmer said Thursday.

Reid is all set in the academics department, and while the Ivy League school does not offer athletic scholarships, it does offer scholarship and aid packages that bring down the cost of tuition. Fulmer said Reid would likely qualify for enough aid that remaining cost would be around $5,000 per year at an institution where the tuition is up to $50,000.

Reid joined the football team as a spindly 6-foot-5 junior that Fulmer plucked off the junior varsity basketball team. In a year's time, Reid put on about 90 pounds to reach 250 pounds. He started on the offensive line for the Buccaneers this past season, his first on varsity. At the team's year-end banquet, Fulmer presented Reid with a football helmet that was inscribed that Reid was the most improved player Fulmer has coached.

In other Gulf news, lineman J.D. Ramirez recently received a visit from Charleston Southern football coach Jay Mills. The only problem is that Ramirez has yet to take the ACT, although Fulmer said his grade-point average is high enough that Ramirez doesn't need a high score to qualify.
