NEWS AND NOTES

Area Well-Represented On 5A All-State Team

The Bay area was well-represented on the Florida Sports Writers Association's Class 5A all-state team.

A total of five area players landed on the first team. Largo had two - RB Brynn Harvey and DL Danny Delguidice. Brandon's Samir Baker was selected for a utility position, while Chamberlain DB Justin Bell was also a first-teamer.

Gaither had four players make the second and third teams. RB Jarvis Giles and LB Mike Whitescarver were selected to the second team, while OL Chris Cardon and PK Nick Cattoi made the third team.

Four players from Chamberlain were selected: Bell, DL Dontavious Pyron (second team), OL Austin Chatman (third team) and QB Dontae Aycock (honorable mention).

Plant City OL Mark Popek, a recent USF commitment, and Alonso DL Jamal Crook were selected to the second team. Wharton DB Jarius Jones and Sickles P Corey Page made the third team.

Brandon's Marquel Gilmore was an honorable mention as a utility player.

MAKING THE ROUNDS: Urban Meyer was a busy man Thursday.

After visiting Plant, the University of Florida football coach hiked over to Gaither to get an up close-and-personal look at Giles. Recruiting rules prohibit contact with underclassmen this time of year, but Meyer was able to speak to an assistant coach about the Cowboys' star tailback.

"He wanted to get an eyeball's look at him in person after seeing him on film," Gaither coach Mark Kantor said.

Giles has received offers from Tennessee and UCF.

Meyer also stopped by Wharton to take a look at Jones, Coach David Mitchell said.

SAMPSON LEAPS TO PLANT: Gaither's second-leading receiver has landed with a new team.

Sophomore Alan Sampson has transferred to Plant. Sampson was second on the Cowboys last year with seven receptions for 128 yards. He was second to Giles (1,575 yards) in all-purpose yards with 608. He was also the third-leading scorer with five touchdowns. His 37.5 kickoff return average included a long of 99 yards and another of 90 yards for a touchdown - against Plant.

"We wished he would have stayed," Kantor said. "But it's the nature of the beast, I guess."
