Ten days after Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman was suspended for her use of "lynch" in commentary on Tiger Woods, an editor was fired Friday for illustrating the controversy with a noose on the cover of Golfweek magazine.
Dave Seanor, vice president and editor who took responsibility for the noose cover of the Jan. 19 issue, was replaced by Jeff Babineau.
"We apologize for creating this graphic cover that received extreme negative reaction from consumers, subscribers and advertisers across the country," Turnstile Publishing Co. president William J. Kupper Jr. said. "We were trying to convey the controversial issue with a strong and provocative graphic image. It is now obvious that the overall reaction to our cover deeply offended many people. For that, we are deeply apologetic."
Turnstile is the parent company of Golfweek.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem called the cover "outrageous and irresponsible" and accused the magazine of tabloid journalism.
PGA: Robert Gamez, in the tournament on an exemption, shot a 5-under 67 to take the lead after three rounds of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in Palm Desert, Calif.
Gamez went to 17-under 198, good for a one-shot lead through 54 holes. Tied for second are Justin Leonard (67) and D.J. Trahan (68). Boo Weekley (62-201) is fourth, while Dade City's Tim Petrovic (68), Kenny Perry (65), Anthony Kim (67) and Steve Elkington (69) are tied for fifth at 203.
CHAMPIONS: Tom Purtzer shot a bogey-free 10-under 62 to take the first-round lead in the season-opening MasterCard Championship in Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii. Jim Thorpe and Allen Doyle were tied for second at 63.
