TAMPA - The word on Keith Thurman when he was an amateur was that he was destined to be a hard-hitting professional. Of his 101 amateur victories, 76 were by knockout.
So he turned pro.
Thurman's professional debut in November was a first-round knockout, and so was his second Friday night at the A La Carte Event Pavilion.
It took Thurman 22 seconds to dispose of Tremaine Boone (0-1-1) with a crisp left to the head. After the shot, Boone stood stunned before dropping to the canvas.
"I saw the way he was covering his face, he was scared," said Thurman (2-0, 2 KOs). "You can see fear in the eyes. ...
"He's a fighter, and fighters know 'I've got to do something.' The second he tried was the second I threw, and that was the last second."
In the main event, Derrick Samuels (14-3-1, 3 KOs) picked apart Corey Petterson (7-2, 4 KOs) for the first two rounds before scoring a TKO in the third round.
It wasn't one punch that did Petterson in, as Samuels landed a crisp round of hooks. Petterson was out on his feet, causing referee Brian Garry to halt the match. As the fight was called, Petterson nearly fell through the ropes.
Tarpon Springs' Brian Chiarry (9-6-1, 2 KOs) scored a fourth-round TKO of Charles Wade (1-4, 1 KO). After Chiarry delivered a left to end the fight, Wade charged Chiarry, wildly punching and then tackling him.
In earlier bouts, Ahsandi Gibbs (6-0, 2 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Angel Roman (10-21-4, 4 KOs), as did Inka Laleye (3-0) with a 40-36 unanimous decision against Tallahassee's Eric Clinton (0-2-1); Jean Baptiste (7-2-4) and Carlos Pena (5-12-1, 4 KOs) fought to a draw in the second bout, while Marvin Blair (1-0-1) earned a unanimous decision over Samir Mohammad (0-2).
