Chargers TE Antonio Gates vs. Patriots SS Rodney Harrison
Even with a painful toe injury, Gates represents a difficult assignment for Harrison, one of the hardest hitters in the game. Harrison has a nose for the football and arrives in an ill mood, but at age 35, he doesn't have the wheels to keep up with Gates. Indy TE Dallas Clark burned the Chargers last week for six catches for 95 yards, including a 25-yard scoring reception. If Gates isn't severely hampered, Harrison will need substantial help.
ADVANTAGE: Gates.
Chargers OLB Shawne Merriman vs. Patriots LT Matt Light
With his startling athleticism and pass-rushing instincts, Merriman is tough to neutralize coming off the right edge. It was Merriman's pressure against Peyton Manning that led to a key fourth-down incompletion last week in the red zone. The Patriots pride themselves on giving Tom Brady adequate time to survey the field, and New England's elaborate protection schemes will frustrate Merriman and take him out of his game.
ADVANTAGE: Light.
