ST. PETERSBURG — A 29-year-old man who died Sunday when he was thrown from a sport utility vehicle on a Sunshine Skyway access road was identified today as Charles R. Price Jr. of Bradenton.
A 6-year-old girl, who was with him but survived the wreck, was identified as Alexis D. Price, also of Bradenton, the Florida Highway Patrol said this morning. Alexis is Charles Price's daughter, his uncle, Joe Price, said today
A 1997 Oldsmobile Bravada driven by Charles Price was heading south on a paved access road that parallels the bridge when it slid off the road, overturned and landed on its side on the Tampa Bay shoreline, the patrol has said.
Price, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle, the patrol said. The girl, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to All Children's Hospital and treated for minor injuries, the patrol said.
"He was a good father, he raised his daughter by himself," said Brandie Heller, a friend. Price was on disability because of a back injury.
At the time of the wreck, he was on his way home from church in St. Petersburg. Sometimes, on their way to their apartment in Bradenton, Price would use the access road to drive to the shoreline and spend time with his daughter, Heller said.
Alexis is in the care of the family as funeral arrangements are being made for her father, Heller said.
