Regarding "Respite In Clinton-Obama Racial Row" (Our Opinion, Jan. 16):
I do believe that Senator Clinton was complimenting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King needed someone to champion the legislation and sign it into law.
I was working as an educator and also as an intercity bus driver during that time, and blacks came into both places of employment in greater numbers after the legislation was passed. If it had not been implemented by President Johnson, the Civil Rights Act would probably have taken years to pass Congress and may have been many more years before it would have been signed and enforced.
I feel that I lived through the making of some historical changes in our country in both my occupations and that we are better off for it. It's my feeling that most people want to get along and have a secure job that they can provide for themselves and their families. At least that is what I observed from working with people of all races in education and in driving buses.
