TALLAHASSEE - A week after being told by his top two choices - Florida and Georgia - that they were out of available scholarships, 6-foot-6, 270-pound OL Zebrie Sanders verbally committed to Florida State on Sunday.
Sanders spent the weekend visiting FSU players and coaches, including a chat Saturday with FSU head coach Bobby Bowden. He also hung out some with former Jefferson High standout Daron Rose, who helped show Sanders around campus.
"I can't wait to get down there," said Sanders, from Clayton, Ohio. "From what the coaches told me, I'll have a chance to come in and play early."
Sanders is ranked the 15th-best offensive tackle prospect in the nation according to Rivals.com. West Virginia, UCLA and LSU were other schools Sanders considered.
TRIO IN TOWN: Three Jacksonville First Coast High teammates - WR Avis Commack, RB Jermaine Thomas and LB Nigel Carr - made their official visits to FSU during the weekend. All three verbally committed to FSU last fall and still plan to sign with the Noles on National Signing Day on Feb. 6.
DAVIS RECONSIDERS: One of the nation's top running back prospects, Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy star Enrique Davis, was once a solid Auburn commitment. That apparently has changed. He visited Ole Miss during the weekend and could be coming back to FSU - he visited the Noles last season - later this month.
"They're still up there. I'm looking at them hard," Davis told warchant.com, an FSU fan Web site. "They were my No. 2 school last year, but it's a whole new year, but they are still in it."
NOLE NUGGETS: As of Sunday, FSU has 20 verbal commitments in the 2008 class. ... Plant High OL Rhonne Sanderson, who received a scholarship offer from Michigan State during the weekend, is still expected to make his official visit to FSU later this week. ... FSU reportedly remains in the hunt for Tallahassee Lincoln CB T.J. Bryant, who visited Alabama during the weekend. ... Tallahassee Godby RB British Footman, who verbally committed to FSU last fall, recently enrolled at Northeast Mississippi Junior College. Footman rushed for 1,423 yards and 17 TDs last season but was not going to qualify academically at FSU.
