Regarding "Dungy Son Transfer Produces Questions" (front page, Jan. 16):
Congratulations on beginning an inquiry on the abuse of special school assignments by athletes in Hillsborough County. Please continue your investigation. It would be interesting to know how many special transfers are approved so kids can play sports at a "good" school. If the district doesn't want to give names (and I understand that in the case of minors) they should at least have to provide accurate data on how many transfers subsequently play a varsity sport at their new school.
If they don't want to provide that info, I would suggest you use public records to check rosters against parent's addresses and see how many kids play for a school not in their district.
If the coaches at these powerhouse schools are so great, why do they have to recruit kids from outside their area?
I am the head soccer coach at Robinson and I find the idea of abusing the special assignment system repugnant and counterintuitive to the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play that we claim to try to instill in our student athletes.
