A 48-year-old man laying on train tracks was struck and killed tonight by a CSX freight train heading into Lake Alfred, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
Lester Petty, who authorities say lived at a nearby mobile home park, was hit by the six-car CSX freight train heading westbound toward Experiment Station Road.
The conductor saw something on the tracks and blew the horn several times, Polk County sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said. The conductor hit the brakes but the train hit Petty, Rodgers said.
The death is under investigation.
