Regarding "Saudis OK Women In Hotels Alone" (Nation/World, Jan. 22):
Woman in Saudi Arabia can now stay in a hotel or furnished apartment without a male guardian - as long as a local police station is notified. Wow, talk about an enlightened society!
The article states woman still are not allowed anywhere with an unrelated man, cannot travel abroad without a male guardian's permission, cannot drive a car or appear before a judge without a man. How is this caveman mentality not portrayed as slavery? Have we become so beholden to foreign oil that we not only turn a blind eye to a horrendous case of human rights violation, but our government actually sells the Saudi government high-end weapons? Don't you think Islamic terrorism against the West is in large part based on the fear of Islamic men that Western influence might cause Saudi woman to rise up and fight for their rights?
Finally, isn't this a classic case of what can happen when the government is empowered to interpret religious principles and make laws based on them?
