Riverview's Addae Considering Options

Jahleel Addae insists he is still firmly committed to West Virginia. But the former Riverview High running back is going to take the time between now and National Signing Day to see what other options are available.

Addae is heading to Iowa State this weekend for an official visit, a trip that comes on the heels of an official visit to Central Michigan this past weekend. And there's a possibility that more trips could be scheduled between now and Feb. 6, Addae and his father, Freddie, said late Tuesday.

"I just want to weigh my options and make sure I'm making the right decision," Addae said.

Addae, a Tribune All-Hillsborough County first-team selection this past season after eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark for a third straight year, verbally committed to the Mountaineers in April.

However, the recent coaching changes within the program - Rich Rodriguez and several of his assistants, including Addae's older brother, Jahmile, left for Michigan, and Bill Stewart was named the new coach - have prompted Addae to re-evaluate his other options.

TWO DAYS FOR TRACK? The Florida High School Athletic Association's advisory committee for track and field has been looking at the pros and cons of changing the state championships from a one-day meet to a two-day format. The idea of making the state finals a two-day meet has been kicked around before, but from the recent discussion among coaches and athletes, it might take off.

The main advantage of a two-day state meet is giving athletes more rest between events. With a one-day meet, for example, distance runners are hard-pressed to pull off a double such as the 1,600/3,200 or 800/1,600. And a triple, such as the 4x800 relay/800/1,600 is nearly impossible to pull off successfully, particularly in the May heat. Sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers also have difficulty performing triples and doubles in a one-day meet because they have to compete in preliminary rounds.

A possible scenario for a two-day meet could see the preliminaries of sprints, jumps and hurdles on the first day and finals on the second. Distance races would also be split up, but the 4x800 would still force some runners to choose whether to double or triple. Moreover, classifications would be combined over the two days, with 1A and 2A together one weekend and 3A/4A the following weekend.

FOOTBALL FINALS STAYING IN ORLANDO: The FHSAA has signed a two-year extension to keep the state's football championship games at Orlando's Florida Citrus Bowl through the 2010 season, the state athletic organization announced.

PLANT LINEBACKER ARRESTED: Plant senior LB Patrick Carter was arrested Monday morning for suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's report, Carter, 18, of 205 S. Occident St. in Tampa, was arrested at the intersection of Neptune Street and Westshore Boulevard in Tampa at 1:03 a.m. Carter's Breathalyzer test showed his blood-alcohol level to be .137 and .126, according to the report. Florida law presumes a driver to be impaired at.08.

Carter, a member of the Panthers' 2006 state championship team and a starting linebacker who led the team with eight sacks last season, was released on a $500 bond.
