PLANT CITY - PLANT CITY - A pedestrian who was hit by a freight train shortly after 3 p.m. today does not appear to have any life-threatening injuries, Fire Rescue Chief George Shiley said.
The victim, Gary Nelson, 35, was taken to South Florida Baptist Hospital to make sure he didn't have internal injuries, police and Shiley said. Nelson was the second pedestrian to be hit by a train in Plant City in a 15-hour stretch, police said.
Nelson and Chris Raymond were walking west on the CSX tracks west of Waller Street, not far from Wheeler Street, when a train hauling chemicals approached, police said. Raymond was able to get out of the way but the engine clipped Nelson, police said.
It was the second incident of the day in Plant City involving a train and a pedestrian, police said. Shortly after midnight, Jerry Torres, 31, of Plant City, had his right foot "mangled" by a train, police said. Torres told police he was sitting near the tracks at Calhoun and Palmer streets when he was struck.
Torres was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
