The University of South Florida had a pep rally last Saturday morning, but not for any of its athletic teams.
University administrators, the school band and Rocky the mascot gathered to cheer on more than 2,000 students who were participating in the third annual Stampede of Service.
The students spent the day volunteering throughout the region - picking up trash in parks, aiding the elderly, tutoring youngsters and collecting food for the needy.
The function was initiated by a student government candidate and has evolved into a university-wide day of service.
The strong and enthusiastic turnout reflects well on the University of South Florida, and shows a commitment to community that should be as much a part of university life as football games and fraternity parties.
