NEW PORT RICHEY - The SPCA Suncoast is marking its 44th anniversary by giving pet enthusiasts a break on fees for microchips and adoptions.
The festivities are from noon to 6 p.m. Feb. 2 at the shelter, 7734 Congress St. Microchips, implanted for pet identification, will be $15, and adoptions start at $44 on some animals.
All adoptions include spaying or neutering, microchipping, deworming, vaccinations and testing for canine heartworm or feline leukemia/feline infectious peritonitis.
"We have many dogs, like Sambuca, and cats, like Jinx, who will make great companions that are simply being overlooked," said Martha Murray, director of the SPCA Suncoast.
"Sambuca has been waiting for her new home for almost a year and Jinx has been with us since December 2005."
Several Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleaders will sign autographs at the shelter from noon to 2 p.m. Football fans are invited to wear their team's colors, tour the facility and visit the pets that need loving homes.
The shelter has a need for donations of nonedible Nylabones and Kong toys (medium through extra large) for dogs. These toys are durable and can be disinfected easily, which helps keep the dogs healthy.
Visitors who make donations valued at $10 or more will receive a first edition copy of Animal Planet's new pet sitter DVD in the dog or the cat version.
