Red Sox, A's To Open In Tokyo

TOKYO - The Red Sox and the A's will open the 2008 regular season with a two-game series on March 25-26 at Tokyo Dome.

The Red Sox and A's will tune up for the series with exhibition games against the two most popular teams in Japan - the Hanshin Tigers and the Yomiuri Giants - on March 22-23.

Bonds Asks Judge To Dismiss Perjury Charge

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds asked a federal judge to dismiss perjury charges against him Wednesday, arguing the indictment is "scattershot" and noted for its "striking inartfulness."

Bonds was charged in November with lying to a grand jury about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Yankees, Red Sox Finish On Top In Payroll

NEW YORK - The Yankees did finish first in something last year - spending.

The Yankees wound up with a record payroll of $218.3 million.

The World Series champion Boston Red Sox were a distant second at $155.4 million, according to information received by clubs from the commissioner's office. The Los Angeles Dodgers were third at $125.6 million.

At the back end were Tampa Bay ($31.8 million), Florida ($33.1 million), Washington ($43.3 million) and Pittsburgh ($51.4 million).

BREWERS: Infielder Abraham Nunez agreed to a minor-league contract.

INDIANS: Rafael Betancourt, one of the AL's top relievers last season, signed a two-year contract that includes a third-year club option.

REDS: Pitcher Jeremy Affeldt finalized a one-year, $3 million contract.

ROCKIES: Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki finalized a $31 million, six-year contract that includes a club option for 2014.

PADRES: Kevin Towers received a two-year contract extension that runs through 2010 and is thought to put him among the top five or six highest-paid GMs in baseball. The team wouldn't divulge financial details.

PIRATES: Oft-injured pitcher Jaret Wright agreed to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.
