TAMPA - Rashad Callaway gave Tampa a 68-66 victory over No. 22 and Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern College with a jumpshot with two seconds left.
The Spartans move to 11-4 on the year and 5-2 in the SSC with the victory, while the Mocs drop to 14-5 and 5-2 in league play.
Tampa maintained a slim lead throughout the first half, taking a 32-31 lead into halftime. The Moccasins came out in the second half on an11-5 run as they took a seven-point lead with 16:08 remaining.
Florida Southern kept the lead until the 5:45 mark, when Johnathan Ball gave the Spartans a 58-56 lead. The Mocs proceeded to score the next five points before Chris Evans tied the game at 61 with 3:39 on the clock. UT then scored five consecutive points to take a 66-61 lead.
A turnover and a foul for Tampa allowed Florida Southern to tie the game on a Rob Eldridge 3-pointer before Callaway held the ball for the last shot of the game, which was converted on a jumper from the top of the key.
Evans enjoyed a career night for UT, where he set a school record with nine blocked shots. Evans also registered team highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds while he connected on five of seven 3-pointers. He also led UT with three steals in 39 minutes.
Ball added 20 points for Tampa, and he matched Jeremy Black and Chris King with a team-high three assists.
Women
TAMPA 72, FLORIDA SOUTHERN 69: The University of Tampa women's basketball team won its third straight game, against archrival Florida Southern College.
UT improves to 13-3 and 6-1 in the SSC, while the Mocs drop to 10-7 and 3-4 in conference play.
The first half remained close, though Florida Southern held the lead for the first 12 minutes. UT took its first lead on a pair of Erica Woodard free throws with 8:09 left in the half. The game went to halftime deadlocked at 30.
Angela Guiu put the Spartans up for good with a 3-pointer with 1:33 remaining.
Sheena Walton led Tampa with 23 points and 11 rebounds while turning in nine blocked shots. It marked the 47th straight game in which Walton has registered a block.
Alexa Kane added 14 points, while Brittany Ridley scored a career-high12 off the bench for the Spartans. Guiu added 11 points on 3-for-5 3-point shooting. Kane added a team-high eight assists while Walton was the lone UT player with a steal.
ECKERD 98, SAINT LEO 72: The Saint Leo University women's basketball team (8-9, 1-5) fell to Eckerd College (11-6, 1-5 SSC) in Sunshine State Conference action at Eckerd's McArthur Center.
The Lions were led by senior Latasha Lawrence with a team-high 15 points.
Four Eckerd players scored in double figures to lead the Tritons to their third straight win over the Lions dating back to last season. Eckerd junior Olivia Nagle led all scorers with 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting.
